Xiaoqing Zhang

Associate

  • Xiaoqing Zhang is an attorney at Valerian Law, where she is dedicated to advancing civil rights and advocating for underrepresented communities and immigrants. Her work focuses on employment law, workplace discrimination, and wage-and-hour class actions, with a particular emphasis on serving Chinese-speaking clients.
  • Before joining Valerian Law, Xiaoqing worked as a Legal Assistant and Litigation Fellow at a national plaintiff-side employment law firm, where she contributed to a complex employment litigation, a wage-hour class action, and settlement negotiations involving claims of workplace discrimination, retaliation, and wrongful termination. During this time, she supported mediations and court hearings, and prepared mediation briefs, demand letters, and EEOC position statements to advance clients’ claims. Her bilingual fluency in English and Mandarin enabled her to effectively communicate with clients, helping to uncover critical evidence and support litigation strategy.

Xiaoqing’s passion for social justice lawyering is deeply rooted in her personal journey as an immigrant and her early advocacy work in China. She led the public relations team for the International Youth Summit on Energy and Climate Change and challenged discriminatory hiring practices. Xiaoqing earned a law degree in China before coming to the United States to earn a Masters of Laws (LLM) degree at Northwestern University and then a law license in California.

Outside lawyering, Xiaoqing is a landscape and astrophotographer.

I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own. And I am not free as long as one person of Color remains chained. Nor is anyone of you.
