Opening for Associate in 2025

Firm Background: Valerian Law, P.C. is a boutique social justice-oriented law firm with an exciting docket of employment, consumer and complex cases. We handle individual and class action cases in state and federal courts in California and beyond, from our home base in the East Bay near UC Berkeley. We primarily represent workers and whistleblowers who are suffering wage theft, unequal pay, unsafe workplaces, retaliation, discrimination and wrongful termination. 

Job Description: Assist with a variety of our wage theft, civil rights and class action matters in a hands-on, substantive manner with increasing case management responsibility and/or case complexity depending on experience. Drive cases from intake through case closing. Lead discovery and investigation. Assist with trial preparation, and mediations with superior legal research and writing. Manage and support clients and diverse case teams. California-barred associates will have opportunity to run their own cases, get deep experience with both individual and class action representations, appear in court, take depositions, and author briefs on cutting-edge issues.

Work Period: Start date is negotiable.  

Work Location: Primarily remote with 1 day/week in office.

Qualifications: JD and minimum 2 years of relevant post-JD experience. Judicial clerkship experience highly desirable.  California bar license is strongly preferred.

Compensation: Placement on salary scale depends on years of relevant experience. For an attorney with minimum of 2 years of relevant post-JD experience, the salary is $128,000/year.

Opening for Legal Assistant in 2025

Firm Background: Valerian Law, P.C. is a boutique social justice-oriented law firm with an exciting docket of employment, consumer and complex cases. We handle individual and class action cases in state and federal courts in California and beyond, from our home base in the East Bay near UC Berkeley. We primarily represent workers and whistleblowers who are suffering wage theft, unequal pay, unsafe workplaces, retaliation, discrimination and wrongful termination. 

Job Description: Assist with a variety of our civil rights and class action matters in a hands-on, substantive manner. Share in administrative operations for the office. Work closely with attorneys in all aspects of litigation and negotiation. Extremely substantive and intensive professional development opportunities are available in this position.

Work Location: Hybrid; in-office in Berkeley and remote.

Qualifications: To be eligible, applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree. We are not interviewing candidates who are seeking a short, gap-year position before law school, but rather would like to meet those who are interested in at least two years of growth and development within our firm. Applicants should have:

  • strong academic credentials;
  • excellent writing, proofreading and editing skills;
  • fastidious organizational skills, with a particular ability to multi-task;
  • excellent research and analytical capabilities, including a strong attention to detail;
  • initiative and energy to see projects to completion;
  • ability to work effectively in a team environment;
  • well-developed communication and interpersonal skills; and
  • commitment to civil rights and social justice and an interest in litigation;

Additional desirable skills: Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel), Adobe Acrobat or other PDF software, and LexisNexis or Westlaw; working fluency in a second language.

Compensation: Pay starts at $27.50 per hour for entry-level legal assistants and rises to $30 per hour for second-year assistants/paralegals. Pay increases depending on experience.
